Safe Driving

There is an old high school driver education movie that shows a nice guy climb into a car and turn into a raving lunatic. Once behind the wheel this seemingly cordial person transforms into a rude, pushy, nearly violent maniac.

I saw these driver education films as a teenager. We sat in a portable where the PE coach doubled as the drivers ed teacher. After he finished struggling to load the reel to reel movie with help from the AV club (the original geek squad) we watched as a Ward Cleaver look alike strolled to his car as happy as could be. Once behind the wheel he morphed into a mad, almost foaming at the mouth, caricature version of himself.

This guy was the original road rage driver, before we had the phrase road rage. He cut people off, swerved in and out, tailgated, and caused havoc all the way to work. As he pulled into his office parking lot he suddenly became the nice guy again. Almost magically as he exited his car it was if he regained control of his senses.

Today's version of road rage is more serious, more violent and in some cases ends up in real violence. So what has changed? Roads are more crowded, people are more stressed, and cars are more powerful.

Cars Make You Feel Powerful

Driving a car makes you feel powerful. Think about it. You climb into a machine, turn the key, and instantly you can travel at super speed and run over and crush things. You have the power of a superhero.  This instant surge of power transforms many people into something they normally are not - rude, reckless, and dangerous.

Add the power of instant communication (your cell phone), a bird eye view of the universe (your GPS navigation system), and unlimited entertainment (your satellite radio and DVD player) and your power is undeniable. You are a superhero. But with great power comes great responsibility.

As you get into your car remind yourself that you are in control. Don't let the roar of the engine take control of your behavior.  Be strong, be in control and most of all be a safe driver.
